Apple Celebrates App Store’s Fifth Anniversary

But all of that changed when the Apple App Store was launched on June 10, 2008, allowing smartphone users to bank, manage their social media accounts and play games — among other things — on their devices.
“Apps have changed the world,” says Jefferson Graham, USA Today’s tech columnist. “We weren’t as addicted to our phones before the apps.”
“Many of the people we spoke to said they hardly ever go on the computer anymore because they can do everything on their phone now, thanks to apps,” he adds.
When the App Store first opened, there were 500 apps available. Today, that number is over 900,000, according to Apple.
The company says more than 50 billion apps have been downloaded to date. Paid apps have so far generated $10 billion for developers.
To celebrate the App Store’s fifth anniversary, Apple says it’s “giving everyone five landmark games and five groundbreaking apps for a limited time” for free.
