US Arms Used by Iranian-Supported Militias in Syria
Scott Peterson/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Although the U.S. and the West have talked about supplying arms to rebels in Syria, no action has been taken yet.
Meanwhile, Phillip Smyth, an analyst for Jihadology.net, a site affiliated with the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, says guns and other weapons that were made in America and by its allies are being used by forces in Syria that support President Bashar al-Assad.
In fact, Smyth says it’s Iranian-supported Shiite militias who have gotten a hold of these arms.
These militants are flaunting the guns, many of which look to be in new condition, on their websites and Facebook pages, according to Smyth.
Some arms include U.S.-made M-16s and M-4s fitted with laser and holographic sights and M-203 grenade launchers.
Just how they’re obtaining these weapons remains a mystery although the speculation is that many are purchased on the black market in Syria, Turkey, Iraq and Libya.
This would at least partly explain why the White House is reluctant to pull the trigger on sending arms to Syrian rebels, given the ease at which they could be grabbed by the wrong factions.
Florida Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, former chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has previously expressed such concerns, saying that the overflow of weapons into Syria means that they “could one day be turned against the U.S.”
