Veronique de Viguerie/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Nine months after she was nearly killed by the Taliban, Malala Yousafzai is marking her 16th birthday with her first ever public speech.

The young schoolgirl will speak Friday morning before an audience at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.  She is expected to tell the crowd that books and pens are the world’s most powerful weapons, and that one child and one teacher can go on to change the world.

Yousafzai was targeted and shot by Taliban gunmen in her native Swat, Pakistan, last October for supporting education for girls. After emergency surgery in Pakistan, she was flown to the U.K., where she has spent the last several months recovering from a bullet wound to the head.
