Obama Admin. Preparing for Larger Military Strike on Syria, Including Long-Range Bombers
iStockphoto(WASHINGTON) — U.S. officials confirmed the updating of military options for a possible air strike on Syria in retaliation for the alleged August chemical weapons attack on Syrian civilians.
Air campaigns from long-range bombers have been added to the plans, with equipment like B-2 and B-52 bombers flying from the United States. The inclusion of the bombers signifies preparation for a significantly larger military attack than originally promised by the Obama administration.
The air strikes are expected to last at least two days with Tomahawk cruise missiles fired from four Navy destroyers in the Eastern Mediterranean. The ships are loaded with nearly 200 missiles and plans detail firing the majority.
Navy admiral Jonathan Greenert said Thursday there were a “vast number of options” and a long list of capabilities if a strike is ordered.
Military strikes are overwhelmingly unpopular with the American people, based on various recent polls.
