Newlyweds Wary of Years Ending in 13
Purestock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Does it seem like fewer people are getting married this year?
It might have to do with the fact that it’s 2013 and some couples are superstitious about getting hitched in a year ending in “13.”
As silly as it may sound, people have been holding off on walking down aisle until 2014, according to wedding website TheKnot.com, which says that the number of registered events next year is exceeding ones that were planned for 2013.
TheKnot.com’s Denise Favorule acknowledges, “We’ve seen some chat among the brides on our community boards about the unluckiness of the number 13.”
Meanwhile, Doug Ewert with retailer Men’s Warehouse adds, “We believe that the number 13 in 2013 is causing a small but meaningful number of brides to avoid getting married this year.” It’s probably no coincidence then that the company’s tuxedo rentals are down 10 percent this quarter compared to the same time last year.
Wedding dress retailers have also experienced a drop-off in sales in 2013 while DJs, caterers and graphic designers also say business hasn’t been as robust as it was in 2012.
Whether the number 13 really has anything to with it may be besides the point. The wedding industry is just looking forward to 2014.
