Syria Destroys Chemical Weapons Production Facilities Ahead of Deadline
iStock/Thinkstock(DAMASCUS, Syria) — Syria has met its deadline of destroying all of its declared chemical weapons production facilities.
In a statement Thursday, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said the country’s government “has completed the functional destruction of critical equipment for all of its declared chemical weapons production facilities and mixing/filling plants, rendering them inoperable.”
That means Damascus won’t be able to create any new chemical weapons.
Syria had until Nov. 1 to destruct all of its facilities. Now, the country must look forward to meeting its next deadline in mid-2014, when all of its existing stockpiles of chemical weapons must be destroyed.
The OPCW says its Executive Council has until Nov. 15 to “approve a detailed plan of destruction submitted by Syria to eliminate its chemical weapons stockpile.”
