Rob Ford told reporters that he would not step down from office even after Toronto Police said they obtained a video that appears to show the mayor smoking crack cocaine.
The video has reportedly been circulating since last May but it was only now that Toronto authorities had a chance to view it for themselves.
Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair said at a news conference, “The video files depict images that are consistent with what has previously been reported in the press.”
Nonetheless, Blair said he was not pressing charges against the mayor at this time.
It was also revealed that Ford has been a target of an investigation that resulted in charges of extortion against Alessandro Lisi, the mayor’s occasional driver and an alleged drug dealer.
Meanwhile, Ford said at a short press briefing, “I wish I could defend myself, unfortunately I can’t because it’s before the courts right now,” adding, “I have no reason to resign.”
