"The Hobbit" Sequel, "Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas" Open
Marie Ishikawa/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Here’s a look at the new movies in theaters this weekend:
– The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: In the second film in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, which is based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, the hobbit Bilbo Baggins and company make their way to the Lonely Mountain, where they face danger in the dragon Smaug. Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace and Orlando Bloom star in the sequel. Lilly’s character, a fierce elf named Tauriel, was created by Jackson and his team and doesn’t appear in the book. The film is screening in 3D and is rated PG-13. [Click here to read a review]
– Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas: Tyler Perry is back as the sassy grandma, who helps a friend pay her daughter a holiday visit in the country. Larry the Cable Guy, Tika Sumpter and Chad Michael Murray star. Rated PG-13.
And opening in limited release:
– American Hustle: David O. Russell’s Golden Globe-nominated drama, set in the 1970s and inspired by the ABSCAM scandal, follows a con man and his female partner who are forced to work for an FBI agent. The film brings together many actors who’ve previously worked with Russell: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Jeremy Renner also stars. Rated R.
