Netflix Says Nearly Half of Users "Binge-Watch" Television Shows
iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — The existence of Netflix and the ability to “binge-watch” is reshaping the culture of television, with Netflix announcing data that shows almost half of viewers finish a complete season within one week.
The data shows that “the majority of streamers would actually prefer to have a whole season of a show available to watch at their own pace,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer of Netflix.
Binge-watching may be becoming a social norm. The Wall Street Journal reports that Netflix released additional data without specifying which shows were being analyzed. For one drama series, 25 percent of viewers completed a 13-episode season in two days. About 48 percent finished that same season in one week.
Netflix’s data also shows that “the majority” of users only delve into one show at a time, a method far more difficult to emulate using only broadcast television.
Netflix’s model of releasing their own original programming in one fell swoop, such as they did with House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black.
