The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office is announcing the date and location for the 17th Peace Officer Memorial ceremony. The annual ceremony is an opportunity to reflect on the line of duty deaths suffered by police officers during the previous year as well as years past. The Peace Officer Memorial is conducted in conjunction with ceremonies being held during National Police Week in Washington D.C. In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. The event will be held in the auditorium at La Porte High School which is located at 602 “F” Street. The ceremony, which is open to the public, will begin at 6:00 PM.
