Update on Wednesday accidents
Patrol deputies from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office investigated two crashes Wednesday morning in which both drivers claimed to have fallen asleep prior to the crash. The first crash occurred at the intersection of US 35 and Johnson Road. A Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling north on US 35 approaching the intersection with Johnson Road when the driver apparently fell asleep. The vehicle struck a guard rail prior to passing through the intersection, striking the traffic signal control box, landscaping, advertising signs, an industrial pump and eventually ending up with the rear of the vehicle coming to rest against posts supporting an advertising sign for the Family Express gas station on the northwest corner. The driver, who told Deputy Jake Piscowicz he had fallen asleep while on his way to work, complained of pain to his head and was transported to La Porte Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The traffic signals at the intersection were out after the crash. The second crash occurred in the 3700 west block of Waverly Road. The driver of a passenger car that was traveling east on Waverly Road told police the he had fallen asleep prior to driving off of the roadway and striking a mailbox, a large stone, crossing through two yards and striking a truck that was parked in the driveway of a residence. Had the truck not been in the driveway, the errant vehicle would have struck the home. No one was injured in that crash.
