Porter County Sheriff’s Officers responded to a serious bodily injury crash in rural Boone Township on Monday afternoon. The crash involved a moped and a farm tractor pulling a 17 foot wide seed planter. Initial investigation shows the driver of blue moped, 65 year old John Gildein Sr of Kouts, was traveling eastbound on CR 900 S just west of CR 150 W. The driver of the red 2013 Massey Ferguson tractor pulling the seed planter, 62 year old Gary Birky of Pleasant Township, was traveling westbound on CR 900 S just west of CR 150 W. Gildein ultimately ran into the seed planter that was traveling westbound and the width of the roadway. No citations were issued and alcohol/drugs are not believed to be a factor. Gildein was airlifted to Christ Advocate Hospital for serious incapacitating injuries to the leg and foot. Birky was uninjured in the crash.
