INDOT has found that additional work needs to be done to State Road 49, between U.S. 12 and the Indiana Toll Road, near Chesterton. After removing old layers of asphalt, crews determined a strengthening of the base of the road was necessary to ensure a long lifespan for State Road 49. As a result, crews must acquire additional equipment and personnel, which takes time. Work on the State Road 49 resurfacing will resume after Memorial Day. The project is expected to be complete and open to traffic by mid-September. At this time, lane closures will remain until work resumes after the holiday weekend due to the previous removal of asphalt, which is not safe for drivers to travel upon. Drivers should be prepared to slow down in that area, expect delays and stay alert to the shifting traffic patterns.
