Fatal Pedestrian Hit and Run

On Wednesday afternoon, La Porte County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to US 421 north of US 30 in reference to a person laying in the ditch just north of the town of Wanatah in southern La Porte County. Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Doperalski was the first police officer to arrive at the scene along with La Porte County Emergency Medical Service. Upon his arrival, Deputy Doperalski found the female victim laying along the east side of US 421; the victim was deceased. Evidence at the scene led Deputy Doperalski to suspect that the victim had been struck by a vehicle. Detectives are currently working with the coroner’s office in an attempt to identify the victim who did not have any identification; it is believed that the victim is from the Porter County, Indiana area. The victim was pronounced by La Porte County Coroner John Sullivan. An autopsy will be conducted early Thursday morning. The case remains open with investigators currently following up leads. The sheriff’s office is asking for anyone that may have witnessed a white female walking in the area of Wanatah, Indiana this afternoon or any vehicles stopped along US 421 north of US 30 in the same time frame to contact the detective bureau at 219.326.7700 extension 2443 or 2539.
