15 year ago Morgan County Sheriff’s Sergeant Dan Starnes was gunned down in the line of duty. Sergeant Starnes’ widow Janice did not want her husband’s death to be in vain so she began the Fallen Officer Blood Drive. What began as a small effort in central Indiana has grown to now include all 92 counties in Indiana.

La Porte County’s effort will be  Friday June 17th at two locations. In La Porte the American Red Cross will be set up in the La Porte County Complex, 809 State Street between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. In Michigan City, the Red Cross will be set up in the Emergency Operations Center located on the first floor of City Hall from 11:30 AM until 4:30 PM.

La Porte County Sheriff John Boyd and Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek have made a friendly wager over which site will garner the most donations. The loser will buy the winner’s administrative staff lunch.

It is important to note that blood supplies are always a critical levels and one donation has the potential to impact three lives. The fact that this blood drive is in honor of fallen police officers across the state of Indiana gives lends even more meaning to the lifesaving donations.
