Investigation Of Single Vehicle Crash
The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a single vehicle crash that claimed the life of a female driver. Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to CR 200 E south of SR 4 Monday morning. A passerby reported a vehicle overturned in a field. The vehicle was overturned in a field several hundred feet from the roadway. The driver of the vehicle, who had been ejected, was found lying in front of the vehicle and appeared to have been dead for some time. The driver of the vehicle has been identified as 22 year old Norma E. Vermette from rural LaPorte County. Investigation at the scene indicated that the SUV was traveling north on CR 200 E when it failed to negotiate a left hand curve. The vehicle went off of the road, struck a large tree and then rolled several times before coming to rest on its side in a field. The area where the crash occurred is very remote with the nearest home being nearly one mile away. The crash was not witnessed and there were no other vehicles involved. Speed was definitely a factor according to police. It is unknown if alcohol played a factor in the crash; deputies are awaiting the results of toxicology tests. This is the second fatal crash at the same location in less than a year. On October 24, 2015 a 35 year old man from Union Mills was killed in a similar crash at the exact location.
