IED discovered in La Porte County

On Monday July 4th at 1:45 PM La Porte County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a suspected improvised explosive device in the 600 block of Longwood Drive just outside of Michigan City and north of US 20. Once at the scene deputies learned that a resident had been cleaning trash and litter from a ditch along Welnetz Road when she found what she believed to be a homemade firework. The resident took the device to her home on Longwood Drive. Sheriff’s Deputy Jim Fish was the first on scene and quickly determined that this was an IED, evacuated the immediate area and called for additional assistance. The Porter County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad was requested to respond to the scene along with La Porte County Emergency Medical Service and Coolspring Township Firefighters. The IED was transported to a nearby field where it was safely detonated. The device consisted of two mason jars that contained a flammable liquid. Each jar contained a pipe bomb. The devices were connected together with a fuse. Investigators were able to collect enough remnants of the device to help determine who may have made the device.
