La Porte County Sheriff’s office arrests 10 for inmate bond fraud
La Porte County Sheriff’s office is announcing the arrest of ten people in connection with a fraudulent scheme to bond inmates out of the La Porte County Jail using stolen credit cards. On July 11th a supervisor in the department’s jail division noticed what he believed to be unusual activity in an inmate’s attempt to post bond. Corporal Ryan Jones notified the arresting officer in the case, Sergeant Andy Hynek, who began an investigation into the matter. As a result of the investigation it was discovered that inmates in the jail were using an outside source to post bond utilizing stolen credit cards. On July 18th a probable cause hearing was held before La Porte County Magistrate Nancy Gettinger; ten arrest warrants were issued. As investigators continued to gather information in the case a search warrant was in Michigan City on July 19th. Those charged were from Chicago, Michigan City, Highland, and Gary. The United States Secret Service has also been brought into the investigation due to the fraudulent activity having crossed state lines; they are reviewing the case for potential criminal charges at the federal level. Each inmate involved in the fraud scheme has had their bond revoked and all have been taken into custody.
