Update on US 421 crash near PNC Campus
In a story WIMS has been following, At around 9:15 PM on Tuesday, La Porte County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a fatal crash on US 421 near the Purdue North Central campus. Upon arrival patrol deputies learned that a bicyclist had been struck by a vehicle and that the person on the bicycle was deceased. Investigation at the scene found that a vehicle being driven by a 24 year old from Michigan City was traveling north on US 421 at CR 200 S when the vehicle struck a person riding a bicycle. Based on a statement from a witness as well as evidence at the scene, the bicyclist was believed to be in the middle of the northbound lane of US 421 and did not have any reflective clothing or gear on the bicycle. The area is dark and there are no street lights. The victim that was riding the bicycle and was killed has been identified as 30-year-old Drew Schmidt from Valparaiso. According to the La Porte County Coroner’s office, toxicology testing indicated that Schmidt had the presence of opioids in his system. Sheriffs Deputies were assisted at by the Westville Police and Fire departments as well as the La Porte County Coroner’s Office. The driver of the vehicle that struck the bicycle tested negative for alcohol and was not cited for any traffic violations.
