On Wednesday morning, the Michigan City Police Department were dispatched to the Kieffer Rd and Cleveland Ave intersection. This was for an accident involving a motorcycle and a passenger car with injuries. Upon their arrival they observed a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle lying on its side in the middle of the intersection and a 2000 silver Pontiac Grand Prix facing northeast in the southbound lane of Cleveland Ave. Members of the MCFD were already on scene assisting the motorcycle driver with his injuries. 58 year old Robert Altherr of Michigan City was transported to St. Anthony’s Hospital where he would later succumb to his injuries. He was the operator and only subject on the motorcycle and had not been wearing a helmet. The driver of the Pontiac had left the scene on foot. Officers eventually located 38 year old Matthew Schmidt of Michigan City walking north on US Hwy 421 just south of the Hwy 94 eastbound ramp. He was taken into custody and transported to St. Anthony’s Hospital. He was treated for some minor injuries and then transported to the MCPD for booking. He was charged with Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Accident which is a Level 5 Felony. He also had an outstanding warrant for Escape and was charged with that too. This investigation is continuing.
