Fatal accident update
WIMS is continuing to follow a fatal accident that occurred Tuesday morning in the 6200 E block of US 20 in La Porte County between Rolling Prairie and New Carlisle. Highway 20 was shut down temporarily between highway 2 and Cougar Road The initial call came in at 7:14 AM. Three vehicles were found to have been involved including a black Volkswagen Jetta, a silver Chevrolet Tahoe and a white Chevrolet Truck. Investigation at the scene indicated that the Volkswagen Jetta was traveling east on US 20 when for unknown reasons the vehicle crossed the centerline. The Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling westbound and swerved to avoid the collision, ran off of the south side of the roadway and rolled over one time. The Volkswagen then struck the westbound Chevrolet truck, which was traveling behind Chevrolet Tahoe, head on. The driver of the Volkswagen has been identified as 50-year-old Lawrence Williams of La Porte, Indiana. Mr. Williams had to be extricated by Kankakee Township firefighters and was found to be in cardiac arrest. He was rushed to La Porte Hospital and was pronounced dead at approximately 8:30 AM. The driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe, a 66 year old from New Carlisle was transported to South Bend Memorial with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the white Chevrolet truck, a 45 year old from South Bend refused medical treatment at the scene. The Sheriff’s Fatal Alcohol Crash Team was called to the scene due to the severity of the crash and are currently in the process of reconstructing the crash in an effort to determine the exact cause. Toxicology results are pending on the deceased driver; the Sheriff’s Office will make the results known once they have been received.
