K-9 helps apprehend wanted fugitive
Members of the Fugitive Apprehension Street Team, assisted by a La Porte County Sheriff’s K-9, successfully apprehended a fugitive on Monday. At 2pm while checking a home located at the 4800 N block of CR 700 E La Porte County Sheriff’s Sergeant Andy Hynek, who is assigned to the US Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force, spotted the wanted suspect, 33-year-old Donald Newland in a vehicle near the residence. Newland fled however it was later determined that he circled back to the home which he entered and then hid from police officers. Several Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area including Deputy Bobby Greer and his K-9 partner Argo. During a search of the residence, the suspect was found hiding by “Argo” in a small cubby hole and concealed by plywood door near a fireplace. Newland was wanted for Revocation of a Suspended Sentence from a previous burglary charge; he is also being held for St. Joseph County, Indiana authorities on a warrant for theft. Due to the charges, Newland has no bond.
