In a story WIMS continues to follow, La Porte police released a statement that in the past several weeks and as recent as this past Wednesday, several surrounding law enforcement agencies have reported that their communities have been victimized by suspects posing as “tree trimmers.” One suspect will lure the homeowner/ resident outside to look at trees, while a second or additional suspects enter the home to steal money/ property. In some of the cases, the suspect tells the resident that he works for the town/ city and they are going to trim trees for free. They are also wearing reflective vests. This type of activity is a scam that has been used for years to allow criminals to access your home. To date, the communities that have been hit have been New Buffalo (MI), St. Joseph County (IN), Pottawattomie Park and a residence just outside of Mill Creek on Wednesday. The suspect descriptions are all similar, but it is unknown at this time if cases are connected. Suspect #1 is described as a Hispanic or black male, clean-cut, heavy build with tattoos. Suspect #2 is described as a black male. If suspects should make contact with you, do not be lured outside, nor should you let anyone you don’t know very well inside your home. Call police immediately.
