Savvy Shields Wants to Be the "Perfectly Imperfect" Miss America

ABC(NEW YORK) — Savvy Shields may be the newly crowned Miss America 2017, but that doesn’t mean that she’s some untouchable goddess who’s better than anyone else.

“I hope in being Miss America, that I can be relatable to all,” she tells ABC Radio. “I’ve always had a dream that Miss America is branded as the best of us, and to me that means being perfectly imperfect — realizing that your imperfections are what make you authentic, and that’s what makes you relatable.”

“So hopefully, I’ll able to share my great days and share how I’m coping with the hard. That’s what makes Miss America great: that she’s relatable and she’s a role model.”

During her reign, the 21-year-old former Miss Arkansas will promote her platform Eat Better, Live Better.

“I grew up in a super healthy home,” she tells ABC Radio. “I never really thought anything of it my whole entire life until I went into college and started taking charge of my own health, and realizing that food does matter….healthy eating is not that scary.”

By the way, Shields’ birth name is Savannah Shields, but she says she’s been called “Savvy” since she was two years old. “The only person who calls me ‘Savannah’ is my ballet teacher,” she laughs. “Because it’s classical!”
