iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Super Typhoon Meranti ran into the southern part of Taiwan on Wednesday, knocking out power to thousands, causing damages with powerful winds and sending massive waves crashing onto its shores.

Meteorologists clocked Meranti’s latest maximum sustained wind speeds at 184 mph with gusts up to 224 mph, making it the post powerful storm of 2016 so far.

Forecasters expect maximum open-ocean waves of 48 feet as the system churns over Taiwan and heads for China.

Meranti will slow down a bit before making landfall in China’s Guangdong province on Sept. 15, but will still pack a powerful punch, with predicted sustained winds of 92 mph and gusts up to 115 mph.
