ABC/Image Group LA(NEW YORK) — Kiefer Sutherland admits he loves his 24 character Jack Bauer, but for fans hoping for another limited-run Fox series about the seemingly unstoppable secret agent, the clock has run out.

The actor, about to be seen as a reluctant president in his new ABC series Designated Survivor, tells Adweek, “the whole hook to get an audience back to watch” 2014’s hit 24: Live Another Day, was that, “this is a one-time deal, so you should watch it.”

Fans did just that, the actor admits. “[W]hen it worked out for us,  [to] go, ‘Oh, we decided to do another one?’ I don’t think that’s right.”

Sutherland added, “How many bad days can one guy have before it starts to look stupid? Probably about seven, but we did nine!”

The actor says there is “absolutely no plan” for Jack Bauer to appear in Fox’s upcoming spin-off 24: Legacy.

But fear not, Bauer fans: “It doesn’t mean that we can’t make the film [version of 24],” Sutherland says.

“It’s a character that I love until the day I die.”

Designated Survivor debuts Wednesday at 10 p.m. Eastern time on ABC.
