Jim Carrey Sued over Late Girlfriend’s Death
Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic(NEW YORK) — Jim Carrey has been sued for wrongful death by the husband of his late girlfriend, who committed suicide last year.
The lawsuit, filed Monday in Los Angeles by Mark Burton of Portland, Oregon, claims the actor illegally obtained and provided the drugs that killed Cathriona White. Her death at the age of 30 was ruled an overdose of prescription drugs, including Ambien and oxycodone.
Carrey used “his immense wealth and celebrity status to illegally obtain and distribute highly addictive and, in this case deadly, controlled substances,” the lawsuit claims.
The complaint further alleges that he obtained the drugs using an alias.
The lawsuit later states that Carrey’s handlers made an effort to paint him as a “‘grieving, good guy’ as opposed to the individual who had illegally obtained and provided the Drugs that killed White.”
In a statement, Carrey called the lawsuit “a terrible shame.”
“It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man’s lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world,” he said. “I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved.
“Cat’s troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone’s control. I really hope that some day soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace.”
In addition, Carrey’s attorney, Marty Singer, described the lawsuit in a statement to TheWrap as “an outlandish shakedown,” stating that the actor’s prescriptions were legally obtained medications, and that aliases are commonly used by actors for prescriptions.
Burton’s attorney, Michael Avenatti, responded to Singer’s comments in his own statement, declaring, “The only shakedown happening is Mr. Carrey’s attempted shakedown of people with logic.”
The lawsuit seeks various damages, plus funeral and burial expenses.
