Video Captures Bird’s-Eye View of Staggering Damage to Haiti From Hurricane Matthew
ABC News(NEW YORK) — New video released by the U.S. Coast Guard provides a clear picture of the devastation Hurricane Matthew inflicted when it tore through Haiti.
The death toll in the country as a result of the Category 4 storm climbed to 122 people, according to the Haitian Interior minister.
The aerial footage reveals the staggering levels of damage and the heavy flooding that deluged the southern part of the country, leaving some villages completely cut off from the rest of the country.
The crew reported that they witnessed significant coastal flooding and major damage to infrastructure in southern Haiti.
The crew added in a statement accompanying the video that they saw, from a birds-eye-view, “damage to highways, structures and houses along the northern region of Haiti and the south side of Isle De La Tortue.”
The footage also captures rooftops ripped off of buildings and wreckage strewn about.
At least 28,000 homes have been damaged and 21,000 people are in shelters, according to the Haitian Ministry of Interior.
A spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said in a statement Wednesday that at least 350,000 people need immediate assistance, and local officials said this morning that the death toll is expected to rise.
