HEAD ON Crash Sunday Evening injures four off of Route 20
Deputies from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office are investigating to determine the cause of a crash Sunday evening that resulted in four people being seriously injured in a head on crash. Sheriff’s deputes and emergency responders from La Porte County Emergency Medical Service and the Kankakee Fire Department were were dispatched to US 20 just east of CR 300 E for the crash at 6:15 PM (CST)
The initial investigation found that a white Ford Crown Victoria was traveling eastbound and a gray Scion was traveling west on US 20. Witnesses reported that the Scion traveled left of center, crossed the centerline and struck the eastbound Ford. The driver of the Ford made an attempt to avoid being struck however was unable to do so; he was initially reported in critical condition and flown by a medical helicopter to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana. The three occupants of the Scion were all seriously injured with one, the back seat passenger, reported to be critically injured; she was also flown by medical helicopter to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana.
Sheriff’s Deputy Wade Wallace, who is investigating the crash, reported that two of the occupants of the Scion stated that they were changing the radio station when the passenger in the rear of the vehicle noticed they were crossing the centerline and yelled for the driver to correct however it was too late. The driver of the Ford, who is a member of the Indiana National Guard and was returning home from weekend duty in Gary, Indiana, stated that he saw the Scion cross the centerline, braked hard and made an attempt to avoid being hit by the westbound vehicle however was unable to do so.
Due to the severity and number of injured, the La Porte County Emergency Medical Service responded with three ambulances. Additionally two air ambulances; Memorial Med Flight and Lutheran Air, responded to the scene. All four lanes of US 20 were closed between CR 300 E and CR 350 E from the time of the crash until approximately 7:45 PM (CST) A third vehicle that was traveling east on US 20 swerved to avoid the crash and struck a wood post and a garbage can; one occupant of that vehicle complained of pain and sought medical treatment on their own.
Those involved in the crash between the two vehicles are listed below; all are from Elkhart, Indiana. None of the injuries were considered life threatening.
Ford driver~ Kenneth Winquist, age 23
Scion driver ~ Justine Mains, age 18
Scion front passenger ~ Breiona Albright, age 17
Scion rear passenger ~ Asia Vannarath, age 18
As per standard protocol, the drivers of both vehicles will be tested for alcohol and drugs; those test results are pending.
