Lake County Sheriff’s Officer indicted

According to a press release from the Indiana State Police, a Lake County Sheriff’s Officer was indicted Thursday on numerous charges stemming from an investigation by the Indiana State Police. Detective Mike Bailey began his investigation in the fall of 2016 when the Lake County Sheriff’s Department asked the Indiana State Police to investigate the case because it involved one of their police officers. The complainant was a professional co-worker of the officer. A Lake County Grand Jury on Thursday indicted 34 year old Nicholas “Nick” Medarno of Crown Point with: Two counts of Rape, Two Counts of Confinement, One count of Attempted Rape, One Count of Sexual Battery. Medarno has approximately 10 1/2 years of service with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and is a patrolman. Medarno’s attorney is coordinating with the Lake County Prosecutor’s office to turn himself in. He will have a $100,000 surety/$10,000 cash bond upon his surrender. All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
