United Way Reading Buddies program delivers stuffed animals to 160 local classrooms
The United Way Reading Buddies regional literacy program kicked off its 2017-18 school year program this week by delivering more than 3,900 stuffed animal buddies to 160 first and second grade classrooms in Lake and Porter counties. In conjunction with classroom instruction, Reading Buddies assist students improve oral fluency, achieve grade-level reading goals and build confidence in their reading skills.
Sponsored by Attorney Kenneth J. Allen Law Group, more than 20 volunteers joined in the efforts to prepare buddies for delivery. On September 20, Mr. Allen assisted in the delivery to Central Elementary in Portage and Beiriger Elementary in Griffith. Reading Buddies delivery was made possible Two Men & a Truck of Valparaiso, Valparaiso University girls’ softball team and First Methodist Church.
