ABC(NEW YORK) — American Idol‘s new judges — Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan — made their first appearance together on ABC’s Good Morning America Wednesday.

In addition to talking about the forthcoming ABC reboot of the music competition series, they weighed in on Sunday’s mass shooting at a country music festival in Las Vegas that killed 59 people and injured more than 500.

“You always have it in the back of your mind, ‘Naw, that would never happen.’ And then when it finally happens,  it’s terrifying,” said Lionel, who has a Las Vegas residency.

“[T]o think…that we’re…now getting to a stage now where live performances are in jeopardy…the worst nightmare we ever have in life is for something like that to happen!” he said.

Luke Bryan, who performed at that festival, was shaken, especially for his friend Jason Aldean, who was on stage when the shooting started.

“It was one of the most heartbreaking days of my life, and for this country, too. I talked to Jason Aldean … and hearing one of your best friends shaken up like that, knowing they’ll never be able to un-see these things, I dunno I — you get lumps and you get nauseated.”

He added of the victims, “They’re our fans, they embody America.”

For her part, Perry said prayer is good, but noted, “one thing we have to remember is prayer without action is powerless.”

Perry also said we can’t just go back to normal after this.

“Honestly, I get like really sick to my stomach seeing everyone saying, you know, sending their condolences, and then going back to selfie-ing,” she says. “We need to take an unfortunate good, hard look at…gun reform.  No one is saying ‘take away you guns,’ but we don’t necessarily need assault rifles.”
