Iraqi forces retake Hawija from ISIS control
Romanista/iStock/Thinkstock(HAWIJA, Iraq) — Coalition forces have freed the Iraqi city of Hawija from ISIS control after a two week battle, U.S. Central Command announced Thursday.
According to a press release, more than 1,000 terrorists surrendered following 14 days of fighting.
“Our Iraqi partners fought bravely and professionally against a brutal and determined enemy,” Lt. Gen. Paul Funk II, Commanding General of the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve said. He added that the Iraqi forces succeeded in “safeguarding innocent civilians throughout the entire campaign.”
There are other operations currently underway in Western Anbar province. Centcom touted the freed cities of Mosul, Tal Afar and Hawija as proof of “progress in the campaign to defeat ISIS.”
