"Punisher" pulled from New York Comic Con following Las Vegas Massacre
NETFLIX(NEW YORK) — Netflix and Marvel announced Wednesday that they’d canceled The Punisher panel planned for New York Comic Con in the wake of Sunday night’s mass shooting in Las Vegas.
The Punisher, for which Netflix has yet to announce a release date, is a spin-off of the Daredevil series; Jon Bernthal plays the titular lead, special forces soldier-turned violent vigilante Frank Castle.
The heavily armed character — and Bernthal’s portrayal of him — are a fan favorite.
“We are stunned and saddened by this week’s senseless act in Las Vegas,” read a statement from Netflix and Marvel. “After careful consideration, Netflix and Marvel have decided it wouldn’t be appropriate for Marvel’s The Punisher to participate in New York Comic-Con. Our thoughts continue to be with the victims and those affected by this tragedy.”
A trailer for The Punisher debuted over the summer, depicting acts of gun violence. The decision to cancel the panel comes just a few days after 58 people were killed at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas. An estimated 489 people were injured in the attack.
