ABC Image Group/LA(LOS ANGELES) — Following movie mogul Harvey Weinstein’s dismissal from The Weinstein Company after multiple sexual abuse allegations were reported by the New York Times, some in Hollywood have been speaking about against the movie producer, including Oscar-winner Meryl Streep.

Meryl Streep, who praised Weinstein as “God” during her Oscar acceptance speech for the movie The Iron Lady, has issued a statement to the Huffington Post saying she was not aware of Weinstein’s behavior, and offering praise for his alleged victims who’ve come forward.

“The disgraceful news about Harvey Weinstein has appalled those of us whose work he championed, and those whose good and worthy causes he supported,” Streep wrote, in part. “The intrepid women who raised their voices to expose this abuse are our heroes.”

While Weinstein’s alleged behavior has been described as an the worst-kept secret in Hollywood, Streep wrote, “One thing can be clarified. Not everybody knew. Harvey supported the work fiercely, was exasperating but respectful with me in our working relationship…I didn’t know about these other offenses: I did not know about his financial settlements with actresses and colleagues; I did not know about his having meetings in his hotel room, his bathroom, or other inappropriate, coercive acts.”

“And if everybody knew,” she continued, “I don’t believe that all the investigative reporters in the entertainment and the hard news media would have neglected for decades to write about it.”

She added, “The behavior is inexcusable, but the abuse of power familiar. Each brave voice that is raised, heard and credited by our watchdog media will ultimately change the game.”
