(LOS ANGELES) — One of the best-reviewed Marvel movies ever — Thor: Ragnarok — hit theaters on Thursday night, and director Taika Waititi tells ABC News his goal was to make people smile.

“The audience is there to have fun, you know?” he says. “There’s so many depressing movies on at the moment, and everyone’s taking everything so seriously, we really wanted to make this an enjoyable, cosmic adventure.”

Waititi, who is better known for his independent films than for big budget fare, thinks his previous experience gave the film different vibe than other Marvel films.

“[The action scenes], that’s not my strength. My strength is tone and character, people talking, dialogue and getting relationships happening, and the characters,” he explains. “So that’s why I feel like this film is probably different to, you know, what you’re used to. It’s probably more like an independent film that costs way more than an independent film.”

Thor: Ragnarok — which features an appearance from Waititi as Korg, a gladiator who defends Thor — opens nationwide on Friday from Marvel Studios, which, like ABC News, is owned by Disney.
