"Essence" to honor Tessa Thompson, Tiffany Haddish, Danai Gurira, and Lena Waithe at the Black Women in Hollywood Awards
ABC/Paula Lobo(LOS ANGELES) — Tiffany Haddish officially changed the game with her breakout role in the summer blockbuster Girls Trip. Now the actress is one of the four women selected as Essence‘s Hollywood Game-Changers at its annual Black Women in Hollywood Awards luncheon.
Tessa Thompson, who starred as Valkyrie in last year’s superhero blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok, also made the list. She joins her Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart Danai Gurira; the Walking Dead star is set to appear next week in Marvel’s Black Panther.
In addition to that trio, The Chi creator Lena Waithe will also be recognized for her work. Waithe became the first black woman to win an Emmy for comedy writing last year for Aziz Ansari’s Master of None.
“As the modern feminist movement continues to gain prominence during Awards season, women are emboldened to not only speak up, but to stand together,” said Essence Editor-in-Chief Vanessa De Luca in a statement.
“Essence proudly salutes Lena, Danai, Tessa and Tiffany for being remarkable artists shining beyond the screen, and raising their voices to benefit all women.”
Essence‘s annual Black Women in Hollywood Awards luncheon will be held on Thursday, March 1, at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, CA.
