Fatal Accident in Mishawaka Involving School Bus
Shortly after 10:00 a.m. Monday morning, a Mishawaka school bus driven by 65 year old Albert Nagy was in the left northbound lane of Main Street in front of John Young Middle School in Mishawaka. Mr. Nagy intended to turn left at the light on Omer to get to the middle school. A Ford Taurus driven by 28 year old Derek Morris of Mishawaka, was travelling southbound on Main Street. Witnesses told investigators that the Taurus crossed the center line, striking the bus. Mr. Morris was pronounced deceased at the scene. There were two students on the bus at the time of the crash. Mr. Nagy and one of the students was transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. The second student was uninjured. The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT) was activated, per protocol, due to the deceased driver. FACT continues to actively investigate and is working to determine what may have caused Mr. Morris’ vehicle to cross the center line and strike the bus. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday for Mr. Morris.
