Congratulations to Daryl Westphal of the Michigan City Fire Department for receiving the Rotary Club of Michigan City annual Service Above Self Award. Daryl received the award during the Rotary Club’s luncheon at Patrick’s Grille on July 26th, recognizing him for going above and beyond in service to the community. Fire Chief Randy Novak of the Michigan City Fire Department spoke about the Firefighter award winner going to Battalion Chief Daryl Westphal. Battalion Chief Westphal has served the department for over 36 years and has served the department in many positions in his career as a firefighter, including Driver/Operator, Captain, Head Specialists, and Chairman of the truck specification committee. He is also an Emergency Medical Technician, Extrication Technician, Certified Fire Instructor and Fire Investigator. During his career he has received two unit citation awards, the distinguished service award and six letters of commendation. In 2005 Battalion Chief Westphal organized a Memorial service for Michigan City Firefighters who died in the line of duty during the Departments 100 Year anniversary. Chief Novak stated what he takes pride in the most about Battalion Chief Westphal is how he and Westphal’s wife Sharron have volunteered endless hours in organizing and planning the Hoosier Burn Camp visit to Michigan City. Hoosier Burn Camp is a nonprofit organization committed to providing life-changing experiences for young people who have suffered the physical and emotional trauma associated with a severe burn injury. Chief Novak said it was his distinct privilege to nominate Chief Westphal for this honor.
