According, to a press release from the Michigan City Police Department, on Wednesday, at approximately 7:59pm the Michigan City Police Department was dispatched to the 200 Block of Elston St. for a complaint of Shots Fired and someone in a vehicle possibly injured. Upon arrival, Officer Cody Washluske located a vehicle parked in front of 214 Jackson St. and discovered the victim, Justin Ameer Garner age 18 in the driver’s seat wounded from what appeared to be a single gunshot to the head. Officer Washluske summoned for EMS to expedite their response, but the victim was deceased. The LaPorte County Coroner’s Office was summoned to the scene.
Additional members of the MCPD Patrol Division, Investigative Division, and the LaPorte County Drug Task Force (HIDTA) quickly responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. Several persons that were in the area of the homicide were taken to the Investigative Division immediately for questioning which lead to a suspect, Javan D. Brown age 16 whom was taken into custody.
On Thursday, a Probable Cause Hearing was presented by Lead Detective, Cpl. Michelle Widelski, with Chief Deputy Prosecutor Bethany Beckman in LaPorte County Superior Court 1, in front of Honorable Judge Michael Bergerson where a warrant was issued for Count I Felony Murder.
Mr. Javan Brown is being held in the LaPorte County Jail on a One Million Cash Only Bond.
