New Barker Mansion Tours

Posted on: January 6th, 2019 by [email protected] No Comments

Have you ever wondered what it takes to build a 35,000 square foot, electrified mansion in 1905? Or maybe you wondered why Gilded Age mansions such as the Barker Mansion were built in such an old style despite being remarkably modern? Or, why did Katherine and John Barker build such a large house so late in life, for they both passed away less than a year after moving in? What secrets are hidden within these 110-year-old walls?
All these questions and more will be answered on this new tour of the Barker Mansion. The interpreter-led tour will take guests through the design and construction of Barker Mansion, using the original blueprints and the Barker family’s correspondence with the architect, Frederick Wainwright Perkins. This tour encompasses the entire mansion, including the mansion archives and other behind-the-scenes areas normally closed to the public. Guests can explore all 35,000 square feet from Perkins’ perspective, learning how his vision coupled with Katherine Fitzgerald Barker’s ingenuity built Michigan City’s most historic home.
The tour begins at 7 pm on January 18th and lasts two hours, tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth/seniors. Reservations can be made on Eventbrite or over the phone at 219-873-1520. Space is limited and reservations are required.
