On Tuesday afternoon, Michigan City Police units were dispatched to the 300 block of Broadway Street in reference to an automobile vs. pedestrian accident. Long Beach Officer Jason Yagelski was the first officer to arrive on scene and immediately began administering CPR to the victim. It was quickly learned that the 5 year old victim (Delaney Klewer) was struck by an unidentified vehicle as she attempted to cross Broadway Street with her sister. According to a preliminary investigation, the suspect vehicle was traveling westbound on Broadway Street when it struck the child and immediately fled the scene. The victim was immediately transported to St. Anthony Hospital by LaPorte County EMS where she eventually succumbed to her injuries. Witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a black or dark gray SUV, possibly containing a spare tire mounted to the rear of the vehicle. In addition to the Michigan City Police Departments Traffic Division, Chief Swistek has also assigned several detectives to this investigation in hopes that the suspect in this case can be quickly identified and brought to justice. The Michigan City Police Department is urging anyone with information on this crime to contact Lt. Jeff Loniewski at 219-874-3221 Ext. 1008 or Cpl. Steve Alt at Ext. 1045.
