Michigan City man and girlfriend arrested for shooting/firearms charges
Michigan City, IN, September 11, 2017– The La Porte County Drug Task Force announces the arrest of Richard D. SCALES (29) of Michigan City, following a shooting investigation. On Wednesday August 30th, 2017, The Michigan City Police Department responded to an alley in the 200 N. Block of Woodland Avenue, in reference to a shots fired complaint. Responding officers located several vehicles that had been struck with bullets. A short time later, Officer Mike Oberle attempted to stop a vehicle matching the description given by witnesses, in the 3400 Block of Salem Ct. The vehicle fled a short distance, before the driver, later identified as SCALES fled on foot into a wooded area behind Woodland Crossing Apartments where he was apprehended, and a handgun was recovered.
Detective Willie Henderson of The LCDTF began to investigate the case, which ultimately resulted in SCALES being charged with Serious Violent Felon in Possession of a Firearm Level 4 Felony, Criminal Recklessness Level 6 Felony, Resisting Law Enforcement Level 6 Felony, and Resisting Law Enforcement “A” Misdemeanor. SCALES is being held at The La Porte County Jail on a $20,000 cash only bond, and his case is pending in La Porte County Superior Court #1. The bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is reviewing the case for possible federal charges as well.
