(LOS ANGELES) — From the outside, Foo Fighters’ “Carpool Karaoke” appearance looked like a grand old time — Dave Grohl and company piled into The Late Late Show host James Corden’s van to sing Foo songs, and they stopped to surprise some fans at a Guitar Center. However, Grohl tells NME that the experience was “a little uncomfortable.”

“By hour three in dude’s car it got less fun,” adds guitarist Pat Smear. “It kinda went on. When we stopped at Guitar Center, that felt like we were done, but it was like ‘this is halfway.'”

The Foos mean no disrespect to Corden, who Grohl says is “definitely” a genuine lover of music.

“He’s a very nice guy,” Grohl says. “But y’know, I don’t mind singing my own songs at Glastonbury or The O2 but if I had to sing you a song right now I’d be too embarrassed.”

When Smear suggests that “singing other people’s songs would have been easier,” Grohl replies, “I could do that all day.”

“We did The Ramones and Rick Astley, but they didn’t use it,” Grohl says. “I don’t know why.”

The Foos will playing their songs in their preferred setting when they launch a North American tour in support of their new album, Concrete and Gold. The outing kicks off this Saturday, October 7 with the band’s Cal Jam 17 festival, held in San Bernardino, California.
