Attempted robbery at Aldi Foods in Valparaiso

Valparaiso Police were called to Aldi Foods at 2906 Laporte Ave at 7:20 p.m. Friday night for a robbery in progress.  While en-route, police were informed customers had caught and were restraining a male subject. Officers Kobitka, Sgt McIntrye and Sgt. Simpson (off-duty) arrived and located five or six individuals holding a male subject on the floor.  Officers immediately handcuffed the subject.

Police learned through their investigation that a male subject, identified as 36 year old Thomas Powell of Hebron, entered the store approached a cashier with a mask on his face and demanded money. Powell inferred he had a weapon in his pocket while demanding the money. He obtained money from the cashier and was immediately physically restrained by one customer. Additional customers assisted and held the subject on the floor until police arrived. The subject was arrested and held on robbery charges. Police continue to investigate the incident. All money was recovered at the scene.
