The Dark Side dominates final "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" trailer

Lucasfilm(LOS ANGELES) — Things are clearly taking a darker turn in the final trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which debuted during ESPN’s Monday Night Football.

The trailer opens with Adam Driver’s evil, tormented Kylo Ren, his face now scarred from his lightsaber duel with Daisy Ridley’s Rey in The Force Awakens.  He picks up his black lightsaber as Supreme Leader Snoke, voiced by Andy Serkis, intones: “When I found you, I saw raw, untamed power — and beyond that, something truly special.”

We then cut to Rey training with Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker on his exile island, as Luke accepts his old lightsaber from her, completing the moment that ended The Force Awakens, and accepting Rey as his student.

“Something inside me has always been there,” she says.  “But now it’s awake, and I need help.”

Rey’s clearly got the goods to be a powerful Jedi: we see solid rock crack from her power as she meditates, and Luke reacts with surprise — and alarm.

“I’ve seen this raw strength only once before,” Luke declares.  We know he’s talking about his former student-turned-traitor, Kylo Ren.

“It didn’t scare me enough then,” says Luke.  “It does now.”

“Let the past die,” says Kylo Ren.  “Kill it, if you have to,” as we see him piloting a TIE fighter and apparently targeting a ship carrying his mother, General Leia, played by the late Carrie Fisher, who seems to be aware of his presence.  Ren’s already killed his father, Han Solo — will he kill her, too?

With that, we’re off to the races, with shots of the Millennium Falcon with Chewbacca at the helm; Oscar Isaac as X-wing pilot Poe Dameron, doing his thing; and John Boyega’s Finn fighting Gwendolyn Christie’s chrome-plated Stormtrooper, Captain Phasma.

“This is not going to go the way you think!” an urgent Luke Skywalker warns someone.  “Fulfill your destiny!” declares Snoke, an echo of Emperor Palpatine’s line to Luke from Return of the Jedi, as we see him reaching out to someone — followed by a shot of Rey in apparent agony.

“I need someone to show me my place in all this,” Rey then says.  Kylo Ren extends his hand — is he inviting her to join him on the Dark Side?

We’ll find out December 15 when Star Wars: The Last Jedi debuts nationwide from Lucasfilm and Disney, parent company of ABC News.
