Elizabeth Vargas leaving ABC News
ABC/ Donna Svennevik(NEW YORK) — After two decades — 14 years of which were spent anchoring 20/20 — ABC News’ Elizabeth Vargas is leaving the company.
ABC News says that Vargas is leaving in May, the end of 20/20‘s 40th season, to pursue new ventures.
As only the second woman to co-anchor 20/20 — after Barbara Walters — Vargas covered stories such as the Amanda Knox case, gendercide in India and the plight of Christian refugees escaping ISIS in Iraq. Her recent piece “Wonder Boy,” about a family dealing with their son’s rare facial condition, earned 20/20’s highest ratings this season, according to ABC.
In addition, Vargas, who also appeared on World News Tonight and Good Morning America, wrote a best-selling memoir documenting her struggle with anxiety and alcoholism.
