"Pitch Perfect 3," "Father Figures" and "Downsizing" top busy holiday box office weekend

Universal(LOS ANGELES) — Opening in wide release on Friday:

Pitch Perfect 3 — The final film in the Pitch Perfect trilogy finds the Bellas — Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp and company — reuniting for one last singing competition at an overseas USO tour, where they compete with rival groups unfairly equipped with instruments. Also starring Hailee Steinfeld and John Lithgow. Rated PG-13.

Father Figures — Owen Wilson and Ed Helms play a pair of fraternal twin brothers who hit the road in search of their father, who they previously thought was dead, after learning that that mother — Glenn Close — had been lying to them for years. Also starring J.K. Simmons, Christopher Walken, Ving Rhames and Terry Bradshaw. Rated R. (TRAILER CONTAINS MILD EXPLETIVES)

Downsizing — Sideways and The Descendants‘ writer/director Alexander Payne’s satire focuses on a married couple — played by Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig — who agree to join a community of shrunken people to escape their stressed lives, and face life-changing adventures. Christopher Waltz, Jason Sudeikis and Big Little Lies‘ Hong Chau also star. Rated R.

Opening in limited release on Friday:

The Post — Steven Speilberg’s historical drama centers on Katharine Graham, the first female newspaper publisher — played by Meryl Streep — who, along with legendary Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee — portrayed by Tom Hanks — risks her career and freedom to expose a massive government cover-up. Also starring Sarah Paulson and Bradley Whitford. Rated PG-13.

Hostiles — An army captain — played by Christian Bale — reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family back to his tribal lands in 1892. Rosamund Pike also stars. Rated R.
