"X-Files" creator insists he won’t return for another season without Gillian Anderson

(L-R) David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Chris Carter – FOX(NEW YORK) — The X-Files returned for a 10-episode 11th season on Wednesday, but on the heels of series star Gillian Anderson’s announcement that it’ll be her last season, show creator Chris Carter says the future of the show is in doubt.

The popular sci-fi series — starring Anderson and David Duchovny as FBI agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, respectively, who investigate paranormal activity — ran for nine seasons from 1993-2002 on Fox, before returning for a short 10th season to big ratings in 2016.

However, if Anderson does decide to call it quits, Carter insists in an interview with Collider published on Wednesday that he won’t continue without her.

“For me, The X-Files is Mulder and Scully. I think if it were without Scully, I wouldn’t do it,” he says. “That’s not my X-Files.”

“I’m always thinking that this could be it. I don’t know what the future holds. While I try to do my best, and we did well the last time out, this time out could be different,” added Carter. “For me, The X-Filescan go on, indefinitely. It’s really how long Mulder and Scully, and David and Gillian want to do the show.”

In a December interview with TV Insider, Anderson confirmed her earlier statement that she would not be a part of The X-Files beyond the current season.

“I’ve said from the beginning this is it for me,” she insists. “I was a bit surprised by people’s [shocked] reaction to my announcement because my understanding was that this was a single season.”

The X-Files airs Wednesdays at 8 pm ET on Fox.
