ABC/Image Group LA(LOS ANGELES) — American Idol returns March 11 on ABC, along with original host Ryan Seacrest, and they’re banking on new judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry to return the show to its glory days, when it produced stars like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

“Literally, we are wasting our time if we do not find a star,” said Perry at a Television Critics Association panel in Los Angeles on Monday. “America doesn’t need a star. They need like a real legit American Idol.”

Adds Perry, “It’s a beautiful story. And we need those beautiful stories right now to help lift us up, inspire us and believe in ourselves again.”

She thinks the timing couldn’t be better for Idol‘s return either, noting that it takes more than just raw talent to make it in the business these days.

“I think…these days it’s so hard to stand out. You have to like, light yourself on fire on Instagram, while singing and it’s like you still might not get enough hits,” she explains. “It’s come full circle that this platform, this launching pad, may give such an advantage to all those people that need that spotlight.”

Seacrest, acknowledges the show’s failure to produce real superstars in its later years. The key this time around, was finding a group of stars who, “weren’t just gonna be individual stars, but were gonna come on to collaborate, to take this seriously and to give the franchise what it deserves.”
